Southport Shooter Nigel Edge Once Escorted Kellie Pickler to CMA Awards
Arrest Made in North Carolina Mass Shooting at Dockside Restaurant
A man linked to a deadly shooting at a busy restaurant in Southport, North Carolina, has been taken into custody. The incident resulted in three deaths and five injuries.
The suspect, Nigel Edge, 39, who changed his name from Sean DeBevoise in 2023, reportedly opened fire on a crowded dockside restaurant using a short-barrel AR rifle with a suppressor, scope, and folding stock. Authorities state he arrived at the scene and began shooting indiscriminately into the crowd.
Edge is a combat veteran wounded in Iraq, having survived two IED attacks that left him with shrapnel in his head. He recovered from his injuries and previously appeared alongside singer Kellie Pickler as her date at the 2012 Country Music Awards in Nashville, where he was praised for his service. Pickler shared a photo of herself with Edge on a social media platform, describing him as a friend and calling her “angel.”
Edge was reportedly suffering from PTSD and believed to have been experiencing mental health issues. He was detained after the assault and is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five attempted first-degree murder counts, and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
In statements and a book about his military service, Edge claimed he was injured by friendly fire and accused certain groups of conspiring against him. The motive for the shooting remains unknown as investigations continue.
