Marty Sheargold Battles Critics to Revive Career After Matildas Outburst

Marty Sheargold Launches New Comedy Tour Following Radio Exit

Controversial media personality Marty Sheargold has announced a new stand-up comedy tour, seemingly unrepentant after recent backlash over his sexist comments about the national women’s soccer team, the Matildas. The tour is titled ‘The Red Card Show’ and will include performances in Melbourne next March, as well as shows in Geelong, Warrnambool, Bendigo, Sydney, Noosa, and Perth.

Sheargold, 54, addressed his decision to return to the stage, stating on Instagram, “As much as I’ve been trying to embrace early retirement – I’m bored sh*tless, so I’m going to be the 54-year-old man that I am.” His comments arrive after his infamous remarks about the Matildas in February during their participation in the SheBelieves Cup. The comments drew widespread criticism, especially since the team advanced to the semi-finals that year.

During the radio segment, Sheargold compared the team to “Year 10 girls,” criticizing their infighting and friendships. He also dismissed the women’s Asian Cup, saying, “I’d rather hammer a nail through the head of my p***s than watch that. Got any men’s sport?”

Following the controversy, his radio station, Southern Cross Austereo, stated they had “mutually agreed” to part ways, emphasizing the importance of programming aligning with audience standards. Their chief content officer, Dave Cameron, noted, “This is a moment for reflection and review.”

Sheargold later issued an apology, acknowledging the gravity of his comments and expressing regret to the Matildas and his team. He said, “Having mutually agreed to part ways… I sincerely apologize to the Matildas and the broader organization.”
