Football Community Calls for Ban on Brick Walls After Tragic Death of Player

Fans have started a petition demanding the removal of brick walls surrounding football pitches following the death of a young non-league player who collided with a concrete barrier during a match.

Billy Vigar, 21, a former Arsenal academy player, was playing for Chichester City last Saturday when he suffered a severe head injury after hitting a brick wall beside the pitch. Despite undergoing surgery, he passed away last Thursday.

The incident occurred during an away game at Wingate and Finchley, where a brick wall lines one side of the field. It is believed Vigar collided with the wall while attempting to keep the ball in play. Recently, a section of the wall had collapsed, prompting earlier criticism from the club’s chairman about safety concerns.

In response to Vigar’s death, supporters launched a campaign called “Vigar’s Law” on Change.org, which has quickly gathered over 1,000 signatures. The petition advocates for the removal of brick walls and other hard structures around football grounds, emphasizing the risks posed by such barriers.

Supporters argue that these walls are unnecessary for the game and pose serious hazards, especially at grassroots levels where they often stand just a few feet from the touchline. The community stresses that clubs and authorities have a duty to ensure players’ safety and that neglecting to do so is morally wrong.

Flowers have been laid outside Chichester City’s stadium, with tributes flooding in from across the football world, including former clubs Arsenal, Derby County, and Hastings United. Many fans shared their condolences and highlighted how Vigar’s death could have been prevented.

Vigar, who was part of Arsenal’s youth setup until last year, had also played for Eastbourne Borough and Hastings United. His family expressed their devastation, noting that he was doing what he loved when tragedy struck.
