Oklahoma Schools Chief Ryan Walters Resigns After Calling for Trump Bibles in Classrooms

Oklahoma’s Education Chief Announces Departure to Lead Conservative Group

Ryan Walters, Oklahoma’s superintendent of public instruction since January 2023, is resigning to become CEO of the Teacher Freedom Alliance, an organization advocating for alternatives to teachers’ unions.

Walters, known for his outspoken conservative views, declared his intentions to dismantle teachers’ unions, criticizing their influence over public education. His tenure was marked by efforts to incorporate religious teachings, including mandating the teaching of the Bible and the Ten Commandments in schools, though many districts opted to ignore these directives.

In 2024, Walters directed schools to teach the Bible and the Ten Commandments, and proposed a bill requiring all public schools to display the Ten Commandments, but the proposal was largely rejected. He also pushed for a $3 million allocation to distribute “Trump Bibles” — scripture books endorsing the former President, along with civic texts — a request denied by lawmakers.

Walters attempted to promote religious materials in schools, including Trump-endorsed Bibles.

His administration faced controversy over the summer when education board members alleged they saw explicit images on his office TV; Walters denied these claims, and investigations did not lead to charges. Additionally, he announced plans to establish chapters of Turning Point USA in every high school in the state.

Walters’ relationship with Governor Kevin Stitt has been tense, especially over policies like requiring proof of citizenship for student enrollment. As he considers a potential run for governor in 2026, Walters emphasizes current efforts to improve education and focuses on the upcoming school year.

Following his departure, the Teacher Freedom Alliance praised Walters for his dedication to fighting union influence, positioning him as a leader in the movement for education reform rooted in conservative values.
