Ukrainian Refugee Iryna Zarutska’s Father Misses Funeral Due to Wa:r

Family Unable to Attend Ukrainian Refugee’s Funeral Due to War

In Charlotte, the father of Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee who was fatally stabbed on a train, was unable to attend her funeral because he remains in Ukraine. Due to the ongoing conflict, he is of fighting age and required to stay in the country as war continues.

Iryna was laid to rest on August 27 in Charlotte, but her family members in the US, including her mother, younger brother, and sister, could not be present. A neighbor described her as a beloved community member who often cared for neighbors’ pets and was known for her kindness and creativity.

Iryna Zarutska, 23, was stabbed to death on August 22 while riding a Charlotte light rail train home from work.

The tragedy occurred on August 22 when footage captured a man behind her pulling out a pocket knife and stabbing her without warning. The suspect, 34-year-old Decarlos Brown Jr., has a criminal history with multiple arrests, including charges for violent behavior and recent arrests for misuse of emergency services.

The family, having escaped war in Ukraine, is devastated by her loss. According to a neighbor, her death has deeply affected her loved ones who are now mourning from afar.

In a statement, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles called for compassion towards all, including Brown, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia, emphasizing the need for mental health treatment and society’s safety net. However, critics argue that the handling of Brown’s case was inadequate.

Brown was released without bail after being charged with her murder, raising concerns about the criminal justice system’s response. His prior offenses include a five-year prison sentence for armed robbery and an assault on his sister shortly after his release.

Many community members and Zarutska’s loved ones feel the response to her murder reflects systemic failures, and her death has sparked outrage over how mental health and public safety issues are managed.
