Auburn Vet Professor Julie Schnuelle Fatally Attacked in Alabama Park
Retired Auburn University Veterinary Professor Killed in Alabama Park
Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle, a 59-year-old former professor specializing in Large Animal Medicine at Auburn University, was tragically murdered while walking her dog in Kiesel Park. Her body was found in a wooded area of the park, which she frequently visited for exercise and dog walking.
She had arrived at the park in her red Ford F-150 pickup truck, accompanied by her dog, which remained unharmed near her body. The vehicle was later recovered a few minutes away on Wire Road.
Authorities arrested Harold Rashad Dabney III, 28, from Montgomery, on suspicion of her murder. He was apprehended on Beehive Road after police received a report of a suspicious individual. Investigators noted evidence linking him to the crime, and he is currently held without bond at Lee County Jail.
The community is in shock over Schnuelle’s death. She was well-loved as a dedicated animal advocate and educator, with many mourning her loss. Colleagues and students described her as a bright, caring person who made a significant impact in the veterinary field, especially in livestock medicine.
Her former student, Ashley Rutter, recalled, “She ran there every day and was always so welcoming. She was lively, full of jokes, and stood up for others when needed. She had a way of making everyone feel supported and safe.”
Public officials also expressed their condolences. U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville stated on social media, “We are devastated by this loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones, and we hope justice will be served.”
Schnuelle was often seen in the park and around Auburn, where many community members, including those in the veterinary community, remember her kindness and dedication.
