Liverpool Makes Final Decision on Marc Guehi After Last-Minute Transfer Collapse
Liverpool has reportedly finalized its stance regarding a potential move for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, following a last-minute failure to complete the £35 million transfer on deadline day. The proposed transfer appeared imminent, with Guehi set to undergo a medical and prepare to sign a five-year contract with the Reds. However, Palace manager Oliver Glasner intervened at the eleventh hour after the club struggled to find a suitable replacement.
Guehi, who captained Palace to their first major trophy last season by winning the FA Cup against Manchester City, was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool during the transfer window. Discussions between the clubs had been positive, with Palace’s chairman acknowledging that losing Guehi on a free transfer next summer was not feasible. Despite the failed deal, Liverpool remains interested in the defender, but according to reports, any transfer is now postponed until next summer when Guehi’s contract expires.
In the recent transfer window, Liverpool bolstered their defensive options by signing 18-year-old Italian centre back Giovanni Leoni from Parma for £26 million. Sporting director Richard Hughes considers Leoni one of the best young defenders available and envisions him as a future replacement for captain Virgil van Dijk, who will be 36 when his contract concludes.
While the Guehi deal did not materialize, Liverpool’s interest in the Palace defender persists, with plans to revisit the opportunity in the upcoming transfer window.
Liverpool will not pursue Marc Guehi in the January transfer window, according to reports.
