Majority of Locals Oppose Jay-Z’s Times Square Casino, New Poll Reveals

Majority Oppose Proposed Times Square Casino Backed by Jay-Z, New Poll Shows

A recent survey indicates strong public opposition to a proposed casino in Times Square, backed by rapper Jay-Z and developed by SL Green, Caesars, and Roc Nation. Approximately 67% of local voters are against the project, with half of them expressing strong opposition. Only 24% support the casino, while 9% remain undecided.

Conducted by Tulchin Research, the poll surveyed 400 registered voters in nearby zip codes. Concerns cited include increased crime, traffic congestion, and a deterioration of neighborhood quality of life. Voters across all demographics overwhelmingly reject the project, with 73% of women and 74% of voters aged 55 and older opposing it. Younger voters under 55 also largely oppose the plan.

Many respondents fear the casino would worsen local conditions: 77% worry about more crime, 75% about reduced neighborhood appeal, and 74% about amplified traffic issues. These concerns have persisted despite efforts by developers to sway public opinion, including pledges of $250 million in community benefits.

The opposition is so entrenched that the district’s community advisory committee may vote on the casino as soon as this week, after a public hearing. Opponents argue that backing the project contradicts voter sentiment and could harm the neighborhood’s well-being. Meanwhile, casino supporters claim the majority of public input in the process favors their vision, citing a separate poll showing more support.

The debate includes notable endorsements from figures like Fat Joe and Charlamagne tha God, who testified in favor of the casino during public hearings. Conversely, theater owners have distributed anti-casino flyers through Playbill magazine, urging patrons to protest the development.

Despite the controversy, proponents argue the casino could boost local economy, create jobs, and enhance public safety. The final decision hinges on upcoming votes and the community’s response.
