Bernie Sanders Addresses Inequality and Criticizes Tax Cuts for the Wealthy

During a rally in Shreveport, Louisiana, Sanders highlighted the ongoing issue of economic inequality and the influence of wealthy elites over media coverage. He emphasized that those at the top manipulate information to conceal disparities and prevent meaningful discussions on inequality.

Sanders sharply criticized recent comments by Speaker Mike Johnson, who claimed that the reconciliation bill had a “moral component.” Sanders responded, saying, “Is there any religion on Earth that justifies taking food from hungry children to give tax breaks to the richest?” He further condemned the idea of stripping away healthcare from those in desperate need, asserting that such actions are unjustifiable and incompatible with moral values.

The senator stressed the importance of not only defeating harmful legislation but also envisioning a better America. He argued that current bills, like the Trump/Johnson legislation, harm ordinary Americans by neglecting their needs. Sanders pointed out that many families struggle with healthcare, food insecurity, and higher education costs—issues that the legislation worsens.

He clarified misconceptions about his position, stating, “Contrary to claims, I do not support raising taxes on working families. There is no consensus in Congress to eliminate taxes that protect the middle class.” Sanders emphasized that the bill’s true purpose is to favor the wealthy at the expense of ordinary Americans, and he remains committed to fighting for policies that prioritize the needs of working-class families.
