Man United Loan Andre Onana as £21.7m Lammens Replaces £47m Keeper
Manchester United Close to Loaning Out Andre Onana Amid Squad Changes
Manchester United is nearing a deal to loan goalkeeper Andre Onana to Trabzonspor for the remainder of the season, which could mark the end of his time at Old Trafford. Onana’s future has been uncertain since United signed a new goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, from Antwerp for £21.7 million last week.
Although there was initial speculation that Onana would stay, sources have indicated that the club informed him they would not block a move if he chose to leave. Discussions with Trabzonspor, who are in the process of selling their goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, have progressed rapidly, with an agreement reportedly in place for a loan deal before the Turkish transfer window closes on September 12.
Onana, 29, has faced challenges to maintain consistent performance at United, including a costly error during a Carabao Cup game and missing pre-season due to a hamstring injury. Since arriving from Inter Milan two years ago for £47.2 million, he has struggled with form and made several high-profile mistakes, leading to questions about his future at the club.
United previously valued Onana at around £30 million but opted to sign Lammens instead, while also being linked to Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez. The club had indicated a willingness to carry four senior goalkeepers this season, with Onana set to miss a period over the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
Despite having three years remaining on his contract, Onana has expressed interest in exploring his options, leading to discussions about a potential move. His departure would clear the path for Lammens to become United’s starting goalkeeper, with Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton providing backup.
United’s decision to sign Lammens reflects their plans for the goalkeeper position, potentially opening a new chapter for the team moving forward.
