Everton Eyes Future: Contract Talks with Star Player Underway
Everton Planning to Open Contract Discussions with Key First-Team Player
Everton are preparing to initiate contract negotiations with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, aiming to secure his future at the club for the remainder of his career. Pickford, who transferred to Everton from Sunderland in 2017 for a then-record fee of £30 million, has become one of the club’s most valuable assets, making over 320 appearances.
Although he signed a new contract in February 2023 that runs until June 2027, Everton intends to improve his deal to reflect his importance and leadership within the squad. The club recognizes that replacing his caliber of goalkeeper would be extremely costly, making it a prudent move to retain him long-term.
Pickford is considered a key figure within manager David Moyes’ team, forming part of a leadership trio alongside captain Seamus Coleman and James Tarkowski. His recent form has been impressive, and securing his services aligns with Everton’s broader strategic efforts under new ownership to strengthen the squad.
In addition to his contract talks, Everton has been active in the summer transfer window. They recently extended Jarrad Branthwaite’s contract for five years and signed midfielder Merlin Rohl on loan from SC Freiburg, with an obligation to purchase next summer. Notable summer signings also include Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, with plans already in place for future squad improvements.
Moreover, Everton intends to negotiate contract extensions with three players whose deals expire next summer—James Tarkowski, Jack Garner, and Vitalii Mykolenko—acknowledging their importance to the team. The club’s strategic focus remains on building a competitive squad capable of progress under their new ownership.
