Donna Adelson Reprimanded After Outburst in Florida Courtroom During Murder-for-Hire Conviction

Guilty Verdict and Emotional Outburst in Florida Murder-for-Hire Case

A Georgia-based dental matriarch, Donna Adelson, was reproved by a judge following an emotional display after her conviction for masterminding the 2014 murder of her ex-son-in-law, Dan Markel. Inside a Tallahassee courtroom, Adelson cried out “Oh my god” as the jury’s verdict was read, prompting the judge to instruct her to maintain composure.

Judge Stephen Everett, overseeing the trial, ordered the jury to leave as Adelson sobbed uncontrollably, repeatedly lowering her head. After giving her two minutes to regain herself, the court resumed proceedings. The prosecution argued that Adelson, motivated by hatred towards Markel, orchestrated the killing, whereas her defense claimed there was no evidence linking her directly to the crime.

Markel, a law professor at Florida State University, was shot dead in his garage during a custody dispute with his ex-wife, Wendi, who wanted to move their children to South Florida. The case remained unsolved for nearly ten years until federal agents arrested Adelson’s son, Dr. Charlie Adelson, in April 2022. Charlie and his former girlfriend, Katherine Magbanua, hired gang members to carry out the murder.

The shooters, Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera, followed Markel before shooting him in his driveway. Garcia, linked to the Latin Kings gang, received a life sentence, while Rivera, who cooperated with authorities, was sentenced to 19 years. Both Magbanua and Charlie Adelson were convicted of the conspiracy and received life prison sentences.

Wendi Adelson maintains she had no involvement in her ex-husband’s death. Meanwhile, Donna Adelson, who had evaded police for years, was apprehended at Miami International Airport as she attempted to fly to Vietnam, aware of Southeast Asia’s no-extradition policy.

Markel’s mother expressed her grief, stating, “We have lost a treasure. My son’s life was tragically cut short at 41.” The court is awaiting a sentencing hearing, with Adelson’s attorneys requesting delay for her to receive the same protections her son once did.
