Keith Ellison’s Son Keeps $100K Minneapolis Council Salary During Harvard Fellowship

City Councilor Continues Salary Despite Harvard Fellowship

Minneapolis City Councilman Jeremiah Ellison has announced he will retain his six-figure salary while undertaking a full-time fellowship at Harvard University. Despite his new academic role, Ellison clarified he intends to remain engaged with city responsibilities, attending council meetings twice a month and participating in committee sessions virtually.

Ellison, son of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, earns approximately $110,000 annually from his council position, and his fellowship at Harvard is a paid opportunity. His decision has sparked criticism among fellow councilmembers, who emphasize that city rules require members to be physically present to attend meetings and vote.

Councilmember LaTrisha Vetaw expressed concerns about the lack of representation for North Minneapolis, noting that Ellison’s absence from in-person committee work leaves the community without proper representation. She highlighted the importance of his local involvement for constituents.

Some colleagues questioned whether other city employees enjoy similar privileges, with Councilmember Linea Palmisano suggesting that paid leaves of absence like Ellison’s may not be granted to others, raising issues of fairness.
