Amish Mom Accused of Drowning 4-Year-Old Son in Custody
Amish Mother Accused of Drowning Son Amid Beliefs of Divine Test
An Amish woman who believed she needed to be consumed by a fish to demonstrate her faith allegedly drowned her 4-year-old son in an Ohio lake. Following a mental health hospitalization, she is now in custody.
Ruth Miller, 40, faces multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated murder, domestic violence, and child endangerment, related to the tragic events at Atwood Lake on August 23rd.
According to authorities, Miller and her husband, Marcus J. Miller, 45, believed they were receiving divine messages in the early hours while camping. Sheriff Orvis Campbell explained that the couple attempted to prove their religious devotion through a reckless act, suffering from what he described as a “spiritual delusion.”
Miller allegedly told officers she was instructed by God to allow herself to be swallowed by a fish. After returning to their campsite following a morning swim, Marcus was last seen near the water around 6:30 a.m., and his body was later recovered by search teams.
Approximately two hours after Marcus was last seen, Ruth reportedly took her son Vincen to the lake’s dock and drowned him, a confession she allegedly made to deputies. His body was found Saturday evening. Following the incident, Ruth drove a golf cart into the lake with her other children, including her 15-year-old daughter and 18-year-old twin sons, but they were able to escape safely.
Her lawyer, Ian N. Friedman, expressed confidence that the court will find her not guilty by reason of insanity, asserting that Ruth was suffering from a severe mental illness at the time of the tragedy and did not understand the wrongfulness of her actions. She was released from hospital on Monday and later booked into Tuscarawas County Jail.
The court appearance is scheduled for Friday, with her legal team preparing to argue her insanity defense amid the tragic circumstances.
