Matty Cash Credits Unai Emery’s Obsession in Champions League Dream for Aston Villa
Aston Villa Faces Early Challenges Under Unai Emery
Following a successful run over recent seasons, finishing 7th, 4th, and 6th, Aston Villa under coach Unai Emery is currently experiencing a setback. The team stands 19th after three matches and is one of only four Premier League clubs yet to secure a victory this season.
With an upcoming international break, Emery will likely use the time to analyze and address the team’s struggles. Aston Villa is notably the only top-flight club still searching for its first goal of the season.
Despite the rocky start, midfielder Matty Cash remains optimistic about the squad’s potential. As a brand ambassador for sustainable underwear brand Step One, Cash emphasizes the differences in Emery’s coaching approach compared to previous managers. He praises Emery’s attention to detail, noting, “He is the most detailed and intense manager I’ve played under. He studies the opposition for hours and prepares us meticulously, which is a step above previous coaching styles.”
Cash recalls a lengthy team meeting before their season opener against Newcastle, highlighting Emery’s thoroughness. He also underscores the importance of Emery’s detailed training sessions, especially in tactical positioning during attacking phases, which he credits for the team’s recent success in recent years.
Additionally, Cash aims to contribute more offensively, working on finishing and goal-scoring, after balancing defense with some injury setbacks last season. While it’s disappointing they won’t compete in the Champions League this year, Cash and Villa are determined to excel in the Europa League, with ambitions to win the tournament.
He reflects on previous European matches, citing their tough contest against PSG as a sign of the squad’s quality. With Emery’s extensive European experience, they are hopeful of progressing. Cash added, “Playing in the Champions League is everyone’s dream, but now it’s about making a mark in the Europa League.”
Besides club commitments, Cash is preparing to represent Poland in upcoming World Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and Finland. Having competed at the 2022 World Cup, where he exchanged shirts with Messi and Mbappé, he’s eager for more memorable moments on the international stage. “Playing against the best in the world makes me feel I belong on that level,” he says.
Once working in a toy store at age 16 after being released by Wycombe, Cash’s journey has been remarkable. He even applied for Polish citizenship in 2021 through his mother. With ambitions high, he aims to continue making international memories, especially with next summer’s tournaments in mind.
