Renowned Fashion Designer Giorgio Armani Passes Away at 91
Giorgio Armani, the legendary Italian designer credited with transforming celebrity red carpet fashion and establishing a global lifestyle brand, has died peacefully at the age of 91. Throughout his life, Armani was known for his understated elegance and pioneering approach to fashion.
He remained active in his company until his final days, serving as creative director, CEO, and sole shareholder. His dedication to his craft and to his company was evident, as he continued working tirelessly on new collections and projects.
Born in 1934 in Piacenza, Italy, Armani originally studied medicine before serving in the army and later switching careers to fashion. His first role was as a window dresser at La Rinascente department store in Milan in 1957. Initially designing menswear for Nino Cerruti and freelancing for other brands, he launched his own label in 1975, offering both menswear and womenswear.
Armani quickly expanded his brand, introducing lines for swimwear, underwear, accessories, fragrances, and casual wear such as Armani Jeans and Emporio Armani in the early 1980s. He also made a mark in Hollywood, designing costumes for films like American Gigolo and dressing stars on the red carpet, including Diane Keaton, Cate Blanchett, Jodie Foster, and Nicole Kidman.
In 2005, on the company’s 30th anniversary, Armani launched Armani Privé, a couture collection aimed at Hollywood’s high-end market, further cementing his influence in celebrity fashion. Many A-listers, including Cate Blanchett and Naomi Watts, remain loyal to wearing Armani on the red carpet, epitomizing timeless elegance.
His influence extended beyond fashion; he played a vital role in Italy’s cultural scene. Tributes from figures across fashion and politics celebrated his legacy as an icon of Mediterranean style and Italian craftsmanship. A memorial is planned at Armani/Teatro in Milan, and the brand will commemorate its milestone anniversary during Milan Fashion Week, including a special exhibition at the Pinacoteca di Brera.
Reflecting on his career, a statement from Armani’s family and colleagues expressed deep respect: “He founded and nurtured a family-like company with passion and dedication. We are committed to honoring his legacy and continuing his vision in his memory.”
