Born in 1934 in Piacenza, Italy, Armani initially studied medicine before serving in the army. His entrance into fashion started as a window dresser at La Rinascente in Milan in 1957. Throughout the 1960s, he designed menswear for Nino Cerruti and worked as a freelancer before launching his eponymous label in 1975, introducing both men’s and women’s collections.

His brand quickly expanded to include swimwear, underwear, accessories, fragrances, and casual lines like Armani Jeans and Emporio Armani in the early 1980s. Armani also made his mark in Hollywood by designing costumes for films like American Gigolo. His influence extended to the red carpet, where celebrities such as Diane Keaton—who wore an oversized Armani blazer at the 1978 Oscars—became early icons of the brand.

Despite initial reluctance, stars like Michelle Pfeiffer eventually embraced Armani, famously wearing his designs at the 1990 Oscars alongside other prominent actresses. Armani’s understated elegance defined an era, with stars such as Jodie Foster, Cate Blanchett, and Nicole Kidman consistently choosing his designs for the red carpet.
