Giorgio Armani Passes Away at 91

The legendary fashion designer Giorgio Armani, renowned for revolutionizing celebrity red carpet dressing, has died peacefully at the age of 91. The Armani Group announced his passing, noting he worked tirelessly until his final days, dedicating himself to his brand, collections, and future projects.

Born in 1934 in Piacenza, Italy, Armani initially studied medicine before serving in the army. His entry into fashion began in 1957 as a window dresser at La Rinascente in Milan. Throughout the 1960s, he designed menswear for Nino Cerruti and freelanced for various brands before launching his eponymous label in 1975, showcasing both menswear and womenswear.

Armani quickly diversified his offerings, creating lines for swimwear, underwear, accessories, fragrances, and expanding into Armani Jeans and Emporio Armani in the early 1980s. He made significant contributions to film costume design, notably for the 1980 film “American Gigolo,” and established a presence on Rodeo Drive, hiring local VIP outreach representatives.

His breakthrough on the red carpet began in 1978 when Diane Keaton wore an oversized beige Armani blazer to accept her Oscar for “Annie Hall,” marking the first major Hollywood star to don his designs. Initially met with hesitation by other actresses, Armani’s reputation grew, and by the 1990 Oscars, stars like Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster, Jessica Lange, and Jessica Tandy wore his creations, earning the event the nickname “Armani Awards.”

Fashion historian Clare Sauro noted that Armani’s understated and powerful styles marked a shift from the opulence of the ‘80s to the minimalist elegance of the ‘90s. The designer’s influence persisted through partnerships with iconic stars, including Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford’s wedding, and Foster’s multiple Oscar appearances.

In 2005, Armani launched Armani Privé, a haute couture line aimed at Hollywood’s elite, further cementing his status in celebrity fashion. His loyal following among A-list actresses such as Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman exemplifies his enduring legacy. Wearing Armani continues to symbolize success and elegance on the red carpet, a testament to Armani’s exceptional impact on fashion and culture.
