European Bomb Squad: £200m Premier League Footballers Shelved

European Squad Omissions Following Deadline Day

As the UK transfer window closed, attention shifted to the European squads, where a new wave of player exclusions emerged. Teams rapidly registered their lineups for European competitions, facing strict rules on ‘locally trained players’ that differ from those in the Premier League. Each squad has 17 spots for non-homegrown players, with a total of 25 players allowed—of which four must be trained by the club, and another four within the same league.

Many players woke up to find they had been left out, feeling disappointed and frustrated by their omissions. Here’s a look at some of the notable players excluded by nine English clubs in Europe this season:

Goalkeeper

Angus Gunn – Nottingham Forest: The backup goalkeeper who signed recently was left out, partly due to squad size restrictions, as Forest can only include two goalkeepers in their European roster.

Defenders

Axel Disasi – Chelsea: Despite joining the Blues two years ago for £38.5million, Disasi remains in the ‘Bomb Squad’ without a new transfer destination, with rumors linking him to Saudi Arabia.

Radu Dragusin – Tottenham: Still recovering from a knee injury, he is expected back in mid-October but was omitted from the current squad.

Jair Cunha – Nottingham Forest: The young Brazilian winger, purchased for £10m, was left out despite prior high hopes for his development.

Oleksandr Zinchenko – Nottingham Forest: His absence surprised many, given the squad’s need for full-back cover and his European experience.

Midfielders

Ross Barkley – Aston Villa: Despite his experience, Barkley was left out of Villa’s Europa League squad, with recent injuries hindering his participation.

Facundo Buonanotte – Chelsea: Initially excited for Champions League opportunities after a season loan, he was unexpectedly omitted from Chelsea’s European roster.

Forwards

Omari Hutchinson – Nottingham Forest: The club’s record signing, with a £37.5m fee, was left out amid internal tensions, despite a squad featuring six other forwards.

Federico Chiesa – Liverpool: Although he showed promise last season, Chiesa faced limited playtime and was not included in Liverpool’s European squad.

Mathys Tel – Tottenham: His absence from the Champions League squad, despite new signing, marks a significant setback for the young French striker.

Gabriel Jesus – Arsenal: Currently injured and returning to fitness, Jesus missed out, possibly due to attacking options like Gyokeres, Madueke, and Eze.

Overall, these exclusions highlight the intense competition and strategic squad management across European clubs this season.
