James Pate, 93, Kills Wife After Struggling to Cope
93-Year-Old Man Allegedly Murders Wife in Illinois
A 93-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the death of his wife, after reportedly telling authorities that he was driven to the act because he “couldn’t take it anymore.” Authorities say James Pate admitted to slashing his wife Cheryl’s throat during an argument in their car on Tuesday.
According to police reports, Pate was found covered in blood at the scene. He explained that he and Cheryl, age 80, had been planning to divorce, and his pent-up anger culminated in the deadly assault. He told officers he “couldn’t take it anymore,” though it was unclear how long they had been married.
Cheryl Pate was transported to a hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival. An autopsy confirmed she died from multiple fatal injuries, including sharp and blunt-force trauma, which were deemed unsurvivable.
Further details reveal that Pate was detained and charged with first-degree murder. The Tazewell County State’s Attorney’s Office has already filed a petition to prevent his release before trial.
