European BOMB SQUAD: £200m Worth of Premier League Footballers Discarded

European Squad Snubs: Notable Players Left Out Post-Deadline

Following the UK transfer window’s closure, a new wave of exclusions emerged as clubs registered their European competition squads. Managers faced tough choices amid stricter rules on ‘locally trained players,’ limiting team composition to 17 non-homegrown stars within a 25-player squad, with specific quotas for trained players.

Several prominent players found themselves on the sidelines this season. Nottingham Forest, for example, saw backup goalkeeper Angus Gunn excluded shortly after signing. Defenders like Axel Disasi of Chelsea, who remains without a new club despite transfers talks, and Radu Dragusin of Tottenham, sidelined with injury, failed to make the cut. Young Brazilian Jair Cunha and Ukraine’s Oleksandr Zinchenko were also left out, sparking surprise given their experience and potential contributions.

In midfield, Ross Barkley was omitted from Aston Villa’s Europa League squad, despite his versatility and experience, due to injury disruptions. Chelsea’s Facundo Buonanotte also missed out despite the excitement surrounding his loan move, highlighting the competitiveness and strategic choices clubs make.

Top forwards were not spared. Nottingham Forest’s record signing Omari Hutchinson was left off the squad, possibly reflecting behind-the-scenes tensions. Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa and Tottenham’s Mathys Tel faced similar disappointments—Chiesa due to squad competition, Tel because of new signings sharpening the attack options. Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus remains out with injury, having fallen behind new arrivals in the attack hierarchy.

Additionally, a ‘European Bomb Squad’ of notable players—including Raheem Sterling (Chelsea), Naouirou Ahamada and Cheick Doucoure (Crystal Palace), Yves Bissouma, James Maddison, and Dejan Kulusevski (Tottenham), plus others—are unselected for European action this season, some due to long-term injuries.
