Former Premier League Star Receives First England Call-Up in Six Years After Adam Wharton Injury

Former Premier League Player Receives Surprise Return to the England Squad After Six Years

Ruben Loftus-Cheek, currently playing for AC Milan, has been called up to the England national team after a hiatus of over six years. The midfielder’s comeback comes following an injury to Adam Wharton, who sustained an abductor injury during Crystal Palace’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa.

Loftus-Cheek, 29, last represented England in a friendly match against the United States in 2018. His return is notable as he has competed for a place in the midfield squad against other contenders such as Conor Gallagher, Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo, and Trent Alexander-Arnold. Despite often playing as a right-back at club level, Alexander-Arnold has previously featured as a central midfielder for England in major tournaments.

Following Wharton’s injury, reports suggest Loftus-Cheek may take his place in the upcoming matches. The England manager explained that the squad selections aimed to give players a chance to regain rhythm, with both Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold currently left out, citing the need for players to settle after recent club moves.

England is set to face Andorra at Wembley before traveling to Serbia in World Cup qualifiers, currently sitting at the top of their group with five wins and one loss.
