Robin Wright Regrets Co-Parenting with Sean Penn

Robin Wright Reflects on Parenting and Her Ex-Husband

Robin Wright has opened up about her past parenting choices, expressing regret over not being stricter with her children, whom she shares with ex-husband Sean Penn. The 59-year-old actress admitted she was “not hard enough” on their daughter Dylan, 34, and son Hopper, 32, during their upbringing, a realization she has carried for years.

In an interview, Wright explained that her former husband’s demanding career meant he was often absent, which affected their family dynamics. “He was gone so much, and when he returned, he played the role of the enforcer. I was left to manage the residue,” she shared. Wright described Penn as a tougher parent but also noted his limited presence in their children’s lives due to his acting commitments, leading her to soften the impact of discipline.

Hopper has previously spoken openly about his struggles, revealing a battle with crystal meth addiction in 2017, while Wright mentioned Dylan was also rebellious growing up. “Every day, you worry if they’re alive,” she recalled. Wright reflected, “We were both extremes—stern or soft—but what our kids needed was that middle ground, that grey area.”

Despite past challenges, Wright stated that both Dylan and Hopper are now in a good place. She and Penn were married for 14 years, from 1996 to 2010, and have since moved on—she with architect Henry Smith, whom she met in the UK. Wright also expressed admiration for Penn, describing him as a kind and decent man, and highlighted that they maintain a good relationship post-divorce.

She emphasized that their shared goal has always been to remain a family, regardless of their relationship status, and hopes others can find that balance as well.
