Illinois Could Create More Democratic Districts to Counter Trump, Says JB Pritzker

Illinois Faces Potential Redistricting Amid National Political Tensions

As California prepares to present its new congressional map to voters in November, attention has shifted to Illinois, which may be forced to redraw its districts amid escalating political pressures.

The state is contending with the threat of federal law enforcement actions under the guise of immigration raids, alongside concerns about attempts by former President Donald Trump to manipulate redistricting to influence the 2026 elections.

Governor JB Pritzker addressed these issues on CBS’s Face The Nation, stating, “Redrawing the congressional map isn’t something we want to do — no state government prefers mid-decade redistricting. But if Trump continues to push for this across various states, we must consider our options to counteract it.”

Pressed about whether Illinois might redraw its districts, Pritzker acknowledged, “It’s possible to create more Democratic districts in Illinois, and we could do that. But again, it’s not something I wish to pursue.”

This cautious stance aligns with the approach of other Democratic leaders, like California’s Gavin Newsom, who are resisting mid-decade redistricting unless necessary, especially as Trump’s efforts aim to maintain Republican control of the House. Democrats fear that losing the House majority could render Trump a weakened, less influential figure, shifting national focus to the 2028 presidential election.

If the California initiative succeeds, Democrats anticipate reducing the number of seats Republicans could potentially gerrymander—aiming for a margin of just six to eight seats. Waiting to see what other red states do before redrawing maps appears to be a strategic choice by Illinois Democrats, prioritizing the preservation of democratic fairness over political convenience.

While redistricting may not be ideal for Democrats, it could become a necessary move to safeguard democratic processes against attempts at partisan manipulation.
