Bronx Apartment Shooting Sparks Neighbors’ Dispute

Man Arrested After Shooting Three People at Bronx Apartment

A man accused of shooting three individuals in a Bronx apartment was identified as a disgruntled tenant involved in a heated dispute with neighbors over a shared backyard. According to authorities, Jimmy Avila, 44, opened fire early in the morning on College Avenue near East 170th Street in Mount Eden.

Avila, who barricaded himself inside an apartment, was eventually taken into custody after a police standoff. During the incident, he called a local news station and admitted to the shooting, claiming he acted in self-defense, stating, “I didn’t mean to do this, but I had to because these people threatened my life.”

The violence stemmed from an argument over access to the backyard, which Avila believed he exclusively owned because he lived nearby on the first floor. The confrontation turned deadly when the victim, Ryan Hines, the building’s superintendent, was shot and later died from his injuries. Two other men, shot in the buttocks and arm, were hospitalized but in stable condition.
