Houston Man Arrested for Shooting Neighbor at Guinea Pig Funeral

Suspect Arrested in Connection with Shooting During Neighbors’ Burial

A man wanted in Texas was finally taken into custody over a month after allegedly shooting his neighbor in their backyard. The incident occurred while the family was holding a funeral for their pet guinea pig.

John Martin Dixon, 46, was arrested this week for allegedly shooting 18-year-old Emmanuel Menchaca, who was in critical condition after being shot in the torso while attempting to bury the family’s guinea pig. Menchaca spent 17 days in intensive care before beginning recovery.

The shooting happened late on July 17 following an unspecified dispute between Dixon and Menchaca that sparked an argument. Witnesses say Dixon pulled a gun and fired, hitting Menchaca in front of his younger brother. The bullet struck Menchaca’s back, and police responded that night, confiscating Dixon’s firearm and interviewing his father.

Menchaca later identified Dixon as the shooter. Although police acted quickly, Dixon evaded arrest for over a month, during which charges were filed on August 8. He failed to appear in court on August 11, leading to his placement on the state’s Top 10 Most Wanted list with a $3,000 reward and a warning that he was armed and dangerous.

Dixon has prior convictions for evading arrest and marijuana possession. His arrest finally took place on August 25, and he now faces two charges of aggravated assault. Menchaca’s mother expressed her frustration and indicated she believed the charges should be more severe, given the suffering her family endured.

Police are still investigating the motives behind the attack, and authorities acknowledge that uncovering the reason for the shooting might lead to an upgrade in charges. Dixon is currently in Harris County jail and is scheduled to appear in court again in October.
