Champions League Draw: 4 New Teams & Longest Away Trip for English Clubs Revealed
Four Debutants Secure Their Place in the Champions League Draw
Four teams making their first appearance in the Champions League have confirmed their spots in the upcoming group stage, potentially facing the six English clubs in the competition.
Cypriot club Pafos FC and Norway’s Bodo/Glimt advanced after impressive victories in the qualifying rounds. Pafos, only 11 years old, equalized late to draw 1-1 with Red Star Belgrade, clinching a 3-2 aggregate victory. Bodo/Glimt dominated Sturm Graz with a 6-2 aggregate win despite losing the second leg 2-1.
The newly qualified clubs also include Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty, who stunned Celtic on penalties, and Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, completing the quartet of debutants. Kairat’s victory marked only the second time a Kazakh team has qualified, the first being Astana in 2015.
Fans should be aware that facing these minnows often involves daunting travel; for instance, Chelsea faced a demanding 8-hour flight to Kazakhstan last season, winning 3-1 in sub-zero temperatures.
Pafos’ journey to the group stage involved wins over Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dynamo Kyiv, with a dramatic late goal sealing their qualification. They are only the third Cypriot team to reach the Champions League group stage, following Apoel and Anorthosis Famagusta.
Notably, former top clubs’ players have joined Pafos, including David Luiz, whose signing was described as a historic moment in Cypriot football. Kairat held Celtic to two goalless legs but ultimately secured their spot on penalties.
As the tournament approaches, the draw for the group stage will be held in Monaco, revealing the final matchups. Among the top contenders, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea will face challenging opponents such as PSG, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Barcelona, promising an exciting start to the competition.
