Successful Test Flight of SpaceX’s Starship Completes Its 10th Launch

SpaceX’s towering Starship spacecraft launched successfully from the company’s Texas-based facility for its tenth mission, marking a significant recovery after previous setbacks. The test flight took off from Starbase, Texas, at 7:30 p.m. EDT, following delays caused by ground system issues and weather conditions.

During this flight, SpaceX aimed to evaluate multiple experimental aspects of Super Heavy, the vehicle’s powerful first-stage booster, including a controlled descent flip and unique engine configurations. The booster performed flawlessly, executing a precise splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico, achieving a key milestone.

Meanwhile, the Starship’s upper stage separated on schedule and reached its suborbital trajectory. It then deployed eight dummy Starlink internet satellites—a crucial step towards its mission to support future satellite deployments and expand the ongoing Starlink constellation.

Approximately 38 minutes after launch, the spacecraft reignited one of its engines, demonstrating in-space relighting capabilities essential for future missions. About 45 minutes post-launch, Starship re-entered Earth’s atmosphere in what SpaceX described as a stress-test, during which several tiles were intentionally removed to evaluate thermal protection systems. Despite experiencing some damage—specifically to the aft skirt—the vehicle successfully executed its planned landing in the Indian Ocean, coming down within view of a dedicated recovery buoy.

SpaceX addressed earlier issues impacting previous flights. For instance, the June test stand explosion was linked to undetected damage in a critical pressure vessel, which the company has since upgraded with new inspection methods. The problems experienced during Flight 9, including premature breakup of the vehicle, were traced to high forces on the fuel transfer system during descent, leading to new design adjustments for subsequent flights.

Overall, the mission showcased SpaceX’s progress in refining Starship, with successful in-flight satellite deployment and engine relights marking notable achievements. The company celebrated the flight as a major milestone and looks forward to building on this success for future missions.
