Halsey Slams Fans Boycotting Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Americana’ Over Denim Controversy
Halsey Defends Film Amid Boycott Calls
Halsey has publicly supported her co-star Sydney Sweeney and urged fans to see their new crime thriller, despite controversy surrounding Sweeney’s previous American Eagle advertisement. In an Instagram Story, the singer praised the film as an exceptional work by director Tony Tost, emphasizing its artistic merit over gossip tabloid drama.
Halsey stated, “You should go see this movie because Tony Tost created an outstanding film, rooted in a genre he knows deeply. His artistry is more significant than 24-hour gossip.” She reaffirmed her conviction that cinema should be prioritized, adding, “If you love film, then you understand that cinema always comes first. This is cinema.”
She also dismissed criticism linking Sweeney’s ad to negative stereotypes, saying it was unfair for the media to attack the film’s creators due to unrelated advertising issues. The comments follow the movie’s poor opening weekend, which earned about $840,000 across 1,100 theaters, placing 16th at the box office.
Some fans had vowed to boycott the film after Sweeney faced accusations of promoting “Nazi propaganda” through her American Eagle campaign, which played on words like “genes” and “jeans.” The controversy intensified after images surfaced of Sweeney in the ad, prompting a public response.
Despite the backlash, American Eagle issued a statement affirming their commitment to diverse fashion choices, saying, “Great jeans look good on everyone.” Meanwhile, Sweeney has avoided discussing the ad drama publicly, focusing instead on her professional projects. Additionally, her voting registration as a Republican in Florida has added fuel to ongoing public debates.
