Words Democrats Should Avoid to Visit Wokeness Abroad
Campaign to Drop Certain Words from Democratic Language
A prominent center-left think tank has released a list of 45 words and phrases that Democrats are encouraged to avoid to prevent appearing overly aligned with “wokeness.” The group suggests that such language may alienate average voters and hinder effective communication.
The list categorizes problematic terminology into groups like “therapy-speak,” “organizer jargon,” and “explaining away crime.” Terms such as “privilege,” “othering,” “triggering,” “safe space,” and “body shaming” are examples of phrases they consider counterproductive, as they imply moral superiority or excessive sensitivity.
The memo also targets “seminar room language,” which includes expressions like “subverting norms” and “systems of oppression,” often used by progressive representatives. Additionally, phrases like “the unhoused,” “food insecurity,” and “housing insecurity” are classified as “organizer jargon,” signaling loyalty to groups rather than individuals.
Some terminology related to gender and reproduction, such as “birthing person,” “chest feeding,” and “patriarchy,” is recommended for avoidance to prevent confusing or shaming potential allies. Language about crime and justice—such as “justice-involved” and “involuntary confinement”—is also critiqued for framing offenders as victims.
The think tank argues that such language largely originates from academic environments and is rarely used in everyday conversations. They emphasize that voters generally do not employ or respond well to these terms, suggesting that avoiding them could improve communication and appeal.
Social media figures, including White House officials, mocked the list, suggesting that it humorously limits Democratic language. Experts advise fostering open dialogue and avoiding overly restrictive language policing, emphasizing that truthful and direct communication remains key in politics.
