Pacers and Coach Mike Weinar Part Ways After NBA Finals Run
Pacers Part Ways with Assistant Coach Mike Weinar
Following their near miss in the NBA Finals, the Indiana Pacers have announced the departure of assistant coach Mike Weinar. The team and Weinar mutually agreed to part ways this week.
Head coach Rick Carlisle praised Weinar’s character and contributions, highlighting their long-standing professional relationship dating back to 2008. Carlisle emphasized Weinar’s success, including two NCAA championships with Florida and an NBA championship with Dallas in 2011, and commended his key role during this year’s historic Finals run with the Pacers.
“Mike Weinar has been a trusted friend and loyal colleague for over 17 years. As a coach, he’s a proven winner with multiple championships. His integrity as a father, husband, and man has always been evident. Success has followed him everywhere, and I believe it will continue in the future.” — Carlisle
Recently, reports indicated Weinar was in discussions for a top assistant role with the New York Knicks under new head coach Mike Brown. However, he withdrew from consideration, citing a desire to stay with his family in Indiana and to continue working with Carlisle.
It remains uncertain what Weinar’s next move will be after leaving the Pacers. This decision comes shortly after Carlisle signed a multi-year extension to remain with the team, following Indiana’s impressive and unlikely Finals appearance last season.
Without Weinar, the Pacers’ coaching staff will include lead assistant Lloyd Pierce, along with assistants Jim Boylen and Jenny Boucek.
