Eric Adams Adviser Winnie Greco Caught Giving Cash-Stuffed Chips to Reporter
Campaign Adviser Caught Handing Cash in Potato Chip Bag
A former senior aide to the mayor and current campaign advisor was involved in a controversial incident involving cash and a snack bag. Outside a campaign office in Harlem, Winnie Greco handed a reporter, Katie Honan, a crumpled bag of potato chips containing cash. The exchange took place just steps from the campaign headquarters.
The reporter initially believed the bag contained just chips but later discovered a red envelope with at least one $100 bill and several $20 bills inside. Greco claimed the cash was handed out by mistake, describing the act as “accidental.” She expressed remorse, saying, “I make a mistake… I’m so sorry,” and asked for the incident not to be publicized.
Greco, 62, previously served as an Asian Affairs adviser and resigned from her position in October 2024 amid investigations into her conduct. Her Bronx residence was raided, and she faced city probes related to misuse of her official role. Though she had appeared to step back from the public eye, she recently re-emerged as a supporter of the mayor’s campaign.
Legal representatives noted that the gesture was rooted in cultural norms, with attorney Steven Brill explaining that in Chinese culture, giving money signifies friendship and gratitude. Greco apologized, stating her intent was innocent. Campaign officials swiftly suspended her volunteer activities and clarified that Mayor Adams was unaware of her actions.
The incident was reported to the Department of Investigation, which declined to comment further. Meanwhile, political observers suggest that another associate of the mayor, Ingrid Lewis-Martin, could face additional federal charges related to political favoritism.
Despite the controversy, there is no indication that Mayor Adams or his campaign are implicated in the cash exchange. The episode has sparked discussion about cultural misunderstandings and ethical standards in political campaigning.
