Gareth Southgate’s Future in Football & World Cup Vow to Tuchel
Gareth Southgate Clarifies His Future in Football
Gareth Southgate has provided insight into his plans after his recent departure from managing the England national team. The 54-year-old, who left his role following England’s narrow 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, says he is currently enjoying a break from management.
Since stepping down last July, Southgate has not returned to coaching but remains active in various pursuits. In an interview, he stated, “I am very much enjoying my life right now,” highlighting his contentment outside the football arena.
He is engaged in several projects, including writing a book, offering leadership coaching, and supporting young coaches. He also emphasized his interest in addressing issues affecting young men, indicating his desire to contribute off the pitch.
Southgate reflected on his tenure as England boss, where he transformed the team’s culture and led them to two European finals and a World Cup semi-final. Although successful, he has chosen to take a step back from management for now.
Regarding the upcoming World Cup in 2026, being hosted in the United States, Southgate mentioned he plans to follow the tournament closely but prefers to stay out of the way: “It’s very exciting, but I need to stay out of the way of it all.”
England’s new head coach, Thomas Tuchel, has faced mixed results early in his reign, with defeats to Senegal but also some positive performances. The team currently tops their qualifying group, level on points with Greece.
Southgate was honoured with the 2025 PFA Order of Merit for his contributions to football during a recent awards ceremony. Ahead of the World Cup, he expressed enthusiasm about the tournament but emphasized the importance of staying focused on his current pursuits.
“I have some business interests, I’m working on some leadership projects, and I want to help young coaches. I also want to support mental health initiatives for young men. Overall, I am really enjoying my life right now,” he concluded.
