Texas Democrat Sleeps in Capitol After Refusing 24-Hour Police Escort
Texas Democrats Continue Resistance Against Redistricting Measures
After fleeing the state to block a controversial redistricting plan, Texas Democrats remain steadfast in their opposition. The plan, reportedly influenced by former President Donald Trump, seeks to redraw districts to favor the Republican Party and would likely diminish Black voters’ influence, as Texas has the largest Black population of any U.S. state.
Following their absence, Governor Greg Abbott issued arrest warrants for those lawmakers, and upon their return to Austin, they faced immediate restrictions. House Speaker Dustin Burrows mandated that returning Democratic representatives could only leave the House floor with written permission and police supervision, which would last until the House reconvened. While some legislators agreed, Rep. Nicole Collier refused to comply and is now challenging the legislature for unlawful detention.
According to the lawsuit, Collier and two colleagues, Reps. Gene Wu and Vince Perez, who initially agreed to the conditions, stood their ground overnight on the House floor, sleeping on leather chairs to protest the measures. Collier emphasized her commitment to her constituents, stating:
“My community is majority-minority, and they expect me to stand up for their representation. I refuse to sign away my dignity or allow their voices to be silenced through intimidation and discrimination.”
She further added that her vote is a reflection of her community’s interests and that she will not be swayed by threats or police oversight. Several colleagues support her stance, including Rep. Sheryl Cole, who was threatened with arrest during a walk after police lost track of her.
It appears that Collier remains inside the Capitol, with ongoing livestreams capturing her movements on the House floor.
