Prince Harry Honors Prince Philip on VJ Day Anniversary

Prince Harry Honors Prince Philip on the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day

Prince Harry discreetly paid homage to his grandfather, Prince Philip, on the anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ) Day. According to reports, he arranged for a friend to place a wreath of poppies along with a heartfelt letter at the Burma Star Memorial in Staffordshire, England, on August 15.

The gesture occurred after the royal family, including King Charles III and Queen Camilla, had left the commemoration event honoring WWII veterans. The letter, written on Harry’s personal “H” letterhead, praised the bravery of the soldiers in the Far East campaign, referring to them as the “Forgotten Army” whose courage was unforgettable. Harry then penned a personal message to Prince Philip, who passed away in April 2021 at age 99.

He wrote, “This anniversary holds special meaning for me. My grandfather, Prince Philip, served during the Pacific campaign, and though he spoke humbly of those years, I know he deeply respected everyone who fought alongside him.” Harry added that Philip’s service, though quiet, reflected his profound respect for those in his theatre of war.

In his letter, Harry reflected on the shared hardships and bonds forged through service, expressing pride and gratitude towards veterans. “Your story is part of our shared heritage, and it must never be forgotten,” he emphasized, concluding with admiration for their example and the legacy they leave behind.

“He respected all who served with humility,” the author of “Spare” noted, speaking of Philip’s deep regard for his wartime colleagues.

Prince Harry’s tribute comes despite previous tensions; in 2020, he was denied permission to lay a wreath at the official memorial during Remembrance Sunday due to his estrangement from the Royal Family. Earlier that year, Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties and relocated to California, subsequently criticizing certain royal practices and making allegations of racism and bullying.

Last week, Prince William and Kate Middleton also honored WWII veterans on the same anniversary, highlighting the importance of remembering those who served and expressing gratitude for their sacrifices.
