Liverpool Star Almost Snubbed in Premier League Player of the Year; Man United Star Makes Surprising Cut!
Liverpool Player Snubbed from Premier League Player of the Year Shortlist
A key Liverpool player has been overlooked in the shortlist for the Premier League Players’ Player of the Year award, decided by votes from fellow players. The list features six contenders, who will be narrowed down to a single recipient.
Liverpool claimed their second Premier League title under coach Arne Slot, finishing 10 points ahead with four games remaining. Despite a dominant season, only two Liverpool players made the final six nominations, including the Golden Boot winner Mohamed Salah, who is favored to win the award, and midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, recognized for his crucial role in securing the title.
Remarkably absent from the shortlist is captain Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch defender was a mainstay, playing 37 league matches and helping Liverpool achieve the league’s second-best defensive record. Van Dijk was widely regarded as one of the top defenders, and he recently signed a new contract, yet he did not make the final cut, which excluded all defenders entirely.
Salah’s impressive tally of 29 goals in the league remains a highlight of his season, cementing his status as one of the top players. Mac Allister, who scored five goals, was praised for his leadership from midfield, while other finalists include Arsenal’s Declan Rice, who developed into a key central midfielder, and England teammate Cole Palmer, with 15 goals and nine assists.
Newcastle’s Alexander Isak also made the list, following a season where he scored 23 league goals, the second-highest tally. Surprisingly, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was included despite his side finishing 15th. Fans expressed their disbelief on social media over Van Dijk’s omission, with many calling it an oversight given his contributions to Liverpool’s title triumph.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony on Tuesday, August 19.
