Gary Lineker Targets BBC Boss After Sacking in First Match of the Day Review

Gary Lineker Critiques BBC Boss in First Match of the Day Review Since Departure

Gary Lineker, the former host of Match of the Day, shared his thoughts on the show’s debut since his exit, subtly criticizing BBC Sport’s chief, Alex Kay-Jelski. Lineker, 64, left the program last season after 26 years as the main presenter and was replaced by Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, and Kelly Cates.

Having been the longest-serving host and earning £1.35 million annually, Lineker wrapped up his tenure in May following his social media post about Zionism, which contained anti-Semitic connotations, leading to his departure despite planning to cover upcoming major tournaments. He expressed regret over the incident but felt it was best to step away completely.

Chapman hosted the first episode of the new season, and Lineker, who watched from home, praised the show’s quality. He remarked, “I enjoyed it. Chappers did a fantastic job.” Lineker also criticized recent management decisions, implying that attempts to overhaul the show were unnecessary and that the program’s quality remains intact — “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

During a talk on a podcast, Lineker revealed he found the experience of watching the show from outside the studio was surprisingly relaxing. “It was the first time I watched Match of the Day on a Saturday night in years,” he said, recalling he used to attend to other commitments during the broadcast.

He also commented on Wayne Rooney’s debut as a pundit, which he judged positively, alongside Alan Shearer. Lineker appreciated Rooney’s insights despite some fan criticism and enjoyed the show’s relaxed atmosphere, even with a glass of wine in hand. The former striker expressed satisfaction with the fresh analysis and the overall quality of the program, emphasizing that it remains a “really good show.”
