Schwarzenegger Slams Newsom Over Dem Redistricting Push

Arnold Schwarzenegger Joins Fight Against California Redistricting Changes

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is voicing opposition to current efforts to alter the state’s redistricting process. The Hollywood action star, known for his role as “The Terminator,” announced he is preparing to oppose plans by Governor Gavin Newsom to temporarily abolish the state’s nonpartisan redistricting commission.

Schwarzenegger, who famously opposed gerrymandering, posted a photo lifting weights while wearing a shirt that read “terminate gerrymandering,” signaling his stance. His involvement comes amid California Democratic leaders proposing new congressional district maps that could add up to five solidly Democratic seats in the state. Newsom and legislative leaders introduced their redistricting strategy in Los Angeles, seeking voter approval for modifications to the existing process.

The current political landscape is intensifying a national debate, with Republicans in Texas pushing aggressive redistricting initiatives at Trump’s urging, aiming to create GOP-favorable districts in red states, possibly impacting Democrat-controlled seats. In California, Newsom is seeking to hold a special election this year to seek voter approval to temporarily override constitutional amendments that established the independent redistricting commission, which remains popular among many residents.

To do so, Newsom and Democratic lawmakers need a two-thirds majority in the legislature to hold a referendum. The effort is presented as a reaction to federal political maneuvers aiming to influence congressional maps for advantageous partisan control, especially in anticipation of the 2026 midterms. Newsom justified the move as a response to attempts by national figures like Trump to “rig the system.”

Despite opposition from critics who view the move as a threat to California’s independent redistricting process, Newsom argues the process will remain transparent and ultimately empower voters. The governor also emphasizes that his current efforts are temporary and that the state’s commitment to independent redistricting after the 2030 census remains firm. Schwarzenegger’s participation underscores the broader debate over fair representation and the influence of politics on electoral boundaries.
