Gary Lineker Warns Future Match of the Day Hosts: Why He Was Replaced and His Potential Goodbye
Gary Lineker issues a warning to his successors on Match of the Day after his departure
Gary Lineker has expressed his concerns to the new lineup of presenters taking over the hosting duties of Match of the Day. Following his exit, the BBC replaced him with a team of three broadcasters: Mark Chapman, Kelly Cates, and Gabby Logan.
Lineker pointed out that the decision to appoint three hosts underscores the demanding nature of the role. He remarked that it’s a significant commitment, especially considering their families and the lengthy tenure expected—potentially 10 to 20 years—meaning their weekends would be fully booked. He clarified he wasn’t involved in the decision-making process but acknowledged their selection as a compliment.
Although confident in their abilities, Lineker admitted he probably won’t watch the first game of the new season live. Instead, he joked he might catch it later via streaming platforms like iPlayer. Having hosted the show since 1999, he was replaced last year following a social media incident that led to a controversy and his subsequent departure, even missing out on covering the 2026 World Cup for the BBC.
He praised the new presenters, stating he hasn’t spoken to them yet but believes they will do well. He also highlighted that he knows them personally and considers them top talent in the industry. Kelly Cates, who has a background with Sky Sports, confirmed she hasn’t been in contact with Lineker and explained that they simply don’t know each other well.
Lineker emphasized his respect for his successor, saying he thought Gary would be proud of the role and that his influence showed how much he was adored in that position. He concluded by saying he chooses not to imitate others or complicate his legacy—asserting that his style of presenting was unique to him and that trying to be someone else would only cause confusion.
