Anchorage Awaits Trump-Putin Summit Amid Streetside Protests
Protests Erupt in Anchorage Ahead of Trump-Putin Summit
Over 100 demonstrators gathered in downtown Anchorage to voice their opinions ahead of the upcoming summit between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Many participants expressed skepticism about the prospects for peace, especially since Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not present at the talks.
The protesters, mostly Democrats, held signs supporting Ukraine and criticizing Russian aggression. Some carried large Ukrainian flags to symbolize their call for peace, with one resident stating the flag’s message was that Putin could achieve peace instantly if he chose. Another local remarked that Putin could end the conflict simply by withdrawing from Ukraine, accusing him of potentially manipulating Trump’s negotiations for territorial gains.
Many signs questioned whether Alaska might be the next target in Russia’s expansion, with some calling for Putin to leave the state. Protester Maryallen Lambert expressed her belief that Putin could make peace if he simply withdrew, criticizing possible manipulations involving Trump. Another protester, Barbara Hood, who has lived in Anchorage for six decades, emphasized that peace could be achieved quickly if Russia’s leader wanted it.
Ahead of the talks, Trump indicated confidence, stating there was a 75% chance of successful discussions with Putin, and expressed hope for a civil dialogue that could lead to a subsequent meeting involving Zelensky, potentially involving land exchanges. Trump will also meet with Putin at Elmendorf Air Force Base, where they will hold a joint press conference.
