Wayne Rooney Clashes with Tom Brady Over Football Skills and Work Ethic
Wayne Rooney Responds to Tom Brady’s Criticism of His Work Ethic
Wayne Rooney has publicly addressed remarks made by former NFL star and Birmingham City minority owner Tom Brady, who previously questioned Rooney’s dedication. This came after Brady expressed concerns about Birmingham’s head coach’s work ethic in a documentary titled Built In Birmingham: Brady And The Blues.
Rooney, now 39, had a difficult tenure at Birmingham, managing just 15 matches during an 83-day period two seasons ago. His start was marred by poor results, with the team earning only 10 points out of a possible 45, losing nine games and winning just twice before his departure in January 2024.
In his recent podcast, The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney clarified Brady’s involvement, explaining that Brady visited the team only once, prior to a light training session. Rooney criticized Brady’s understanding of football, asserting, “Football is not NFL — NFL operates for three months a year, players need rest, and Brady’s comments are unfair.”
Despite his critique, Rooney emphasized respect for Brady, acknowledging him as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Rooney also mentioned that Birmingham City has made necessary squad changes, improving the team’s prospects.
Rooney’s managerial stint began in October 2023, succeeding John Eustace, who had led Birmingham to sixth place in the Championship. Rooney admitted that the team’s quality limitations contributed to the decline in results during his tenure.
Meanwhile, Brady has faced criticism for his simplistic views on football, including remarks about the rise of young talents like Lamine Yamal. Fans debated Brady’s sports knowledge, especially after he mistakenly referred to Yamal as “Yamine Lamal” during a podcast, highlighting some skepticism about his grasp of the game.
Overall, Rooney’s response underscores the differences in understanding football between professional players and athletes from other sports, while also maintaining mutual respect despite public disagreements.
