Chelsea to Donate Part of Club World Cup Bonus to Families of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva
Chelsea plan to allocate a portion of their winnings from the Club World Cup to support the families of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Spain last month.
The club, having won the inaugural expanded edition of the tournament by beating PSG 3-0 in the final, received a total of £84.4 million, including a bonus of £11.4 million to be shared among players. Each player is set to receive approximately £368,000, with an equal amount donated to Jota and Silva’s families.
Chelsea’s victory marked their first-ever triumph in this competition. The squad featured Pedro Neto, who was Jota’s teammate for Portugal and Wolves.
Fans from various clubs expressed admiration for Chelsea’s generous gesture. Mark Goldbridge commented, “Absolute class by Chelsea to donate such a large amount,” while a Liverpool supporter praised, “That was an exceptional gesture towards Jota’s and Silva’s families.”
Tributes will be paid across the Premier League during the opening weekend of the new season. There will be moments of silence, players will wear black armbands, and tributes will be displayed on stadium screens. Jota, who played 190 Premier League matches and scored 63 goals for Wolves and Liverpool, was part of the Liverpool squad that recently won the league. Liverpool has also retired his No. 20 shirt in his honor.
Club captain Virgil van Dijk emphasized the importance of unity as they mourn Jota: “It will be a very difficult season, but we are all in this together. The only way to get through it is with togetherness,” he said.
