Calum Crowe: Scott Brown Must Change to Stay Relevant, Not Just Rely on Reputation
Ayr United’s Struggles Under Scott Brown Continue Amid Poor Start to Season
After failing to secure promotion last season, Ayr United’s manager, Scott Brown, made some harsh public criticisms of his players following a playoff defeat to Partick Thistle, where his team lost a first-leg advantage. Brown expressed frustration, suggesting that the players lacked desire and mentality, and hinted at personal contemplation about his future.
Despite these comments raising speculation about his departure, the club’s chairman reassured supporters that Brown would remain in charge, emphasizing that his remarks were taken out of context. The club aimed for a fresh start over the summer, seeking to mount a strong promotion challenge at the season’s outset.
However, Ayr’s start to the new campaign has been disappointing, with only one point earned from their first two matches—drawing away at Arbroath and losing at home to Raith Rovers. The reaction from fans at Somerset Park reflected displeasure, underscoring concerns that Brown’s tenure might be under threat if results do not improve.
Looking back, Ayr’s decline began well before last season’s playoff exit, as they ended the previous campaign with only two wins in their final nine games. Despite a significant financial outlay—signing players like Curtis Main with high wages—they have struggled to build a squad capable of competing for promotion. Main, for instance, scored just four goals last season and failed to find the net after March.
Injuries to key players such as captain Ben Dempsey and striker Anton Dowds have further hampered their efforts. Additionally, tactical issues, particularly in defence and the reliance on young, inexperienced players like Kyle Ure and Jude Bonnar, have left Ayr vulnerable in matches.
With mounting pressure and a squad that feels less competitive than last year, doubts are growing about Brown’s ability to turn things around. While he remains under contract until 2027, the club’s ambitions and recent performances suggest his position could soon be in jeopardy if results do not improve. The upcoming fixture against Partick Thistle in the Premier Sports Cup presents an opportunity for Brown to restore momentum.
