Scots to Brush Off Noise and Hit Top Form for World Cup Challenge
Scotland Women’s Rugby Team Responds to Contract and Coaching Changes Ahead of World Cup
Full-back Chloe Rollie emphasized that the Scottish women’s team has returned stronger after facing uncertainty related to player contracts, which threatened to disrupt their preparations for the World Cup. Having been one of the first players to sign a professional contract with Scottish Rugby back in 2017, Rollie acknowledged that the delays in finalizing negotiations came at an inconvenient time and were challenging for her teammates.
Several players are still waiting for clarity on whether their contracts will be extended after the tournament. Captain Rachel Malcolm previously described the situation as unfair and disruptive. Despite these issues, Rollie expressed confidence in the team’s unity, stating, “We’ve managed to come together even more strongly, focusing on our goals and performing well as a squad.”
She also highlighted her respect for the coaching staff, especially head coach Bryan Easson, whose departure after the World Cup she described as a personal disappointment. “I’m gutted about it,” she said. “He’s done so much to elevate our standards and develop us as players. It’s his time to move on, but the way it happened, amid background issues, was upsetting.”
Easson’s exit was announced in July, just weeks before the tournament, which Malcolm called a “shock” and “upsetting” so close to such an important event. Rollie believed the decision was out of Easson’s control and felt the timing was unfortunate, but she stressed that the team remains focused on their performance.
Looking ahead, Rollie feels motivated to make a strong impression in the upcoming matches, particularly the opener against Wales. She reflected on the previous World Cup, noting that their efforts were often limited to simply participating, but now they aim to showcase their true capabilities and secure meaningful wins on the world stage.
