Birch Wathen Lenox School to Close Street for Recess

Exclusive Upper East Side School Wins Street Closure Approval, Sparking Local Concerns

An upscale private school on the Upper East Side has successfully secured the right to close a section of East 77th Street to traffic during certain hours, transforming it into a private outdoor space for its students. This decision has upset nearby business owners who fear the closure will harm their operations.

The Birch Wathen Lenox School, which charges tuition of $62,500 annually, received unanimous approval from Manhattan’s Community Board 8 to shut down East 77th Street between Second and Third avenues for two hours each day, three days weekly. The closure is planned to begin next month, following the terms set by the city’s Open Streets program.

Opponents argue that the school, which features a rooftop playground too small for multiple classes, is imposing on the community. Todd Layne, owner of a nearby laundromat, expressed frustration, saying, “It’s like the wealthy taking from the rest of us.” Business owners on the block worry that even the limited closure could be detrimental, especially during peak hours.

However, school officials have assured the community that the street will be reopened when necessary for emergencies, and that coordination with local services will be maintained. A representative from Northwell Hospitals stated, “Ambulance teams are adaptable, and we will inform them in advance about the closures.”

Head of School Bill Kuhn emphasized ongoing communication with neighbors and noted that the school initially proposed a more extensive shutdown but reduced it after community feedback. The current plan, approved unanimously, is expected to be reviewed at the end of the school year, with adjustments possible based on community input.
