Flood Alerts & Flight Delays Rock Midwest Amid Torrential Rain
Severe Storms Cause Flooding and Travel Disruptions Across the Midwest
Heavy storms swept through the Midwest, resulting in widespread flooding and significant travel delays. At Denver International Airport, over 900 flights were delayed and 21 cancellations due to the adverse weather.
Major airlines reported numerous delays: Southwest with 339, United with 244, and SkyWest with 157. Flood watches and warnings were issued for Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin, warning residents of ongoing heavy rain, hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes through Monday.
One of the hardest-hit regions was Milwaukee, which recorded up to 14 inches of rain. Rivers overflowed, causing extensive flooding that prompted emergency responses. The Milwaukee Fire Department responded to over 600 incidents including gas leaks, basement floods, and water rescues. Meanwhile, the Red Cross opened two shelters for residents displaced by floodwaters.
In Omaha, lightning strikes and high winds accompanied the storm, while in Milwaukee, flooded roads and homes led to road closures and canceled events such as the Wisconsin State Fair. Authorities advised residents to avoid driving or walking through standing water, citing continued danger from the floodwaters.
Milwaukee County officials declared a state of emergency, emphasizing the ongoing risk and likely more rainfall. County leader David Crowley highlighted the importance of safety, stating, “Flooding remains an active emergency. Our top priority is the safety of residents.”
Many residents were advised to stay cautious and check on neighbors, especially vulnerable groups. Emergency services authorities praised first responders and community efforts to assist those in need amid the ongoing crisis.
Looking ahead, authorities anticipate continued downpour, with local officials preparing for possible federal aid to handle the extensive damage and ongoing emergency response efforts. The Wisconsin State Fair’s final day was canceled due to the flooding, as many vehicles were stranded in rising waters amidst widespread power outages.
