Premier League Free Agent Replacing Rio Ferdinand for TNT Sports Community Shield Coverage
New TV Pundit Announced to Replace Rio Ferdinand for Community Shield Coverage
The coverage of the upcoming Community Shield on TNT Sports will feature a new pundit, a former Premier League player who is currently a free agent, replacing Rio Ferdinand. Ferdinand, who had provided insights for the channel for over ten years, announced his departure in May to focus on his business ventures.
Ferdinand’s departure comes ahead of a high-profile match between reigning Premier League champions Liverpool and FA Cup winners Crystal Palace at Wembley, broadcast on TNT Sports instead of ITV.
The former Palace full-back Joel Ward has been named as Ferdinand’s replacement for this game. Ward recently left Crystal Palace after a 13-year spell, during which he made 364 appearances and was part of the team that achieved promotion to the Premier League in 2013. He was also an unused substitute during Palace’s FA Cup final victory last season and lifted the trophy alongside teammate Marc Guehi.
Ward will offer expert analysis on Oliver Glasner’s tactics and team preparations for the upcoming season. Alongside Ward, TNT Sports will feature renowned commentators such as Steve McManaman, Joe Cole, Fara Williams, and Michail Antonio, who recently departed West Ham.
Regarding his departure from TNT Sports, Ferdinand expressed gratitude to his colleagues and fans: “After a decade, I’ve decided to step away. It’s been an incredible journey sharing my passion for football, and I’m thankful for the support from everyone involved. I look forward to the upcoming European final and exciting developments for the channel.”
Ward, who has spent his entire career at Palace, reflected on his new role, expressing enthusiasm for sharing insights into the club and looking ahead to his next chapter, which includes more family time and other business pursuits. He also expressed appreciation for the support from his family and management throughout his career, describing his journey as a dream come true for a football enthusiast.
