Iowa Man Dennis Burnell Dies After Shooting and Arson Incident
Man Dies from Burns After Shooting Neighbors and Setting House on Fire
A 71-year-old man involved in a violent incident in a small Iowa town has succumbed to his injuries. Dennis Burnell shot and killed two neighbors and then set his house ablaze, according to authorities.
Burnell sustained severe burns while fleeing his residence on Wednesday evening and passed away on Friday at the Burn Unit of Kansas University Medical Center.
Investigators report that, after a dispute, Burnell shot Brandon Oman, 38, and his wife Stevie, 35, outside his home in Glenwood. Witnesses indicated that there was an explosion in Burnell’s house prior to the fire, which responders found engulfing the home upon arrival.
Photos show the aftermath, with the house heavily damaged by the blaze. Neighbors, including the Omans who lived across the street, described a history of disputes with Burnell. The couple had a daughter, as noted in their obituaries. Stevie was 35, and Brandon was 28 at the time of their deaths.
Law enforcement officials noted that officers had previously responded to Burnell’s residence for altercations. Court records reveal that Burnell was convicted last August of third-degree harassment against another neighbor and fined over $100.
The incident remains under investigation, with authorities continuing to piece together a motive for Burnell’s actions.
