Cuomo Slams Mamdani for Pocketing $2,300 Aid from Homeless New Yorkers

New York Politician Faced with Criticism Over Housing and Wealth

Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, a leading candidate for NYC’s mayoral race, is under fire for occupying an affordable rent-stabilized apartment while publicly emphasizing policies to aid low-income residents. Ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo publicly condemned Mamdani on social media, highlighting that Mamdani pays just $2,300 a month for a one-bedroom in Astoria, Queens, despite his wealth.

Cuomo’s social media post included a video of Mamdani admitting his rent, and Cuomo stated, “Somewhere in NYC, a single mother and her children sleep in a homeless shelter because Mamdani is occupying her rent-controlled apartment.” The post quickly went viral, with over 19 million views.

Mamdani’s residence, a rent-stabilized unit, is valued by critics as a resource that should be allocated to someone in need, especially amid a severe affordability crisis. Mamdani had previously said he intended to move out once he could afford to, stating, “I now have the means to pay and plan to do so.”

Despite this, Cuomo pointed out Mamdani’s wealth, noting his own fluctuating living arrangements, including a $8,242-a-month apartment in Sutton Place once used by Cuomo himself. Mamdani, who earns a $142,000 salary, married this year in an elaborate Dubai wedding and a private Ugandan ceremony, which Cuomo referenced as evidence of wealthy lifestyle.

Critics argued Mamdani’s use of affordable housing is hypocritical given his affluent background and lifestyle. Mamdani’s supporters argued he is working towards moving out, emphasizing his improved financial situation.

Cuomo responded to Mamdani’s social media post with further criticism and commented on Mamdani’s lavish wedding, suggesting it contrasts with the values of those advocating for affordable housing. Mamdani’s representatives have not publicly commented on the criticism.

Amid the controversy, Cuomo’s allies and critics continue debating the ethics of using affordable housing while possessing significant wealth, with social media responses highlighting concerns over hypocrisy and privilege in the current political climate.
