Man United sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, beating Newcastle in summer transfer race
Manchester United Completes Deal for Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig
Manchester United has officially announced the acquisition of forward Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig, narrowly securing him ahead of Newcastle United.
The 22-year-old Slovenian striker was at the center of this summer’s high-profile transfer race, with both clubs vying for his signature. Newcastle initially offered €75 million (£65m) plus €5 million (£4.3m) in add-ons, which Leipzig rejected. They later increased their bid to €80 million (£70m). In response, Manchester United submitted a bid of €75 million (£65m) plus €10 million (£8.7m), leading Leipzig to eventually accept Newcastle’s offer of €82.5 million (£72m) plus €2.5 million (£2.1m).
Following Sesko’s clear preference to join Manchester United, the club’s management expedited negotiations with Leipzig to finalize the deal. Sesko has signed a contract running until June 2030.

Sesko expressed his excitement about joining the historic club: “Manchester United’s history is very special. What excites me most is the future. The project here shows great potential for growth and success. From the moment I arrived, I felt a positive energy and a family atmosphere, making this the perfect place to develop and reach my ambitions. I look forward to learning from Ruben and collaborating with my teammates to achieve great success.”
Manchester United’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, praised Sesko’s qualities: “He combines exceptional pace with physical dominance, making him one of the brightest young talents in football. His characteristics and personality convinced us he can thrive here and reach world-class potential.”
Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, both new signings, are expected to play key roles alongside Sesko at Manchester United.
With Sesko now part of the squad, Mbeumo and Cunha are anticipated to adjust their roles, possibly dropping deeper into midfield or attacking positions. Meanwhile, Manchester United has also shown interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, a 21-year-old midfielder who impressed in the Premier League this season.
However, the club recognizes a potential obstacle in completing a deal for Baleba, as Brighton has been reluctant to sell and United has already invested heavily this transfer window.
